Jarod wore a mask. It was the first time he had worn a real mask, rather than the mask of his own skin and brain. It was an ornate, expensive Italian mask, and to match it he wore a doublet and hose and a long cape and a sword. He was at the masquerade for New Year’s Eve. These people went all-out for their company parties. They should. The Centre had enough money.

Ooh, this is such a neat idea. I think I should write a longer story in which Jarod crashes the Centre New Year's masquerade.
