Title: No Comfort In The Truth (Part II: Not Afraid Of The Dark)

So... you are Mirage. Now I know. Your work is every bit as magnificent as I'd heard it would be. I had high expectations and you exceeded those and I don't say that often. Now that I'm hooked I want more. I'll wait but not patiently. Congrats.

Well done as always Mirage. I second what twisted said. I love your writing. I feel I'm repeating myself at this point. Please continue and thank you for allowing Jarod to help Parker some with what happened to her as a child. I know how reluctant you are to do that and you give oh Mirage but then you take. Please give us more. Until next time...

*Can someone please contact Craig and Steven and let them know that Mirage will write the Pretender ending we all want and deserve!?*

With every chapter in every story you write Mirage you keep Miss Parker and Jarod alive. You skillfully flesh them out for us. You do this while updating and writing several stories at once.

I remain grateful for all that you do to keep 'The Pretender' in our lives.

Thank you!

Title: No Comfort In The Truth (Part II: Not Afraid Of The Dark)

I love what you did with the title, that he isn't afraid of her darkness and she isn't afraid of his and that's not what's keeping them apart. Because that's what love is I think, accepting everything the other person is, good and bad. Jarod and Parker aren't perfect. I like that you always reveal their humanity. Her response, "why are they all the same?" to his "why are you still here" (I hear him thinking to himself "why aren't you running?") is emotional for me. Parker's interaction with Broots and Julian is also splendid here Mirage. You KNOW these characters well (too well I think ;) ) and I'm grateful to you for writing and sharing with us. I was really expecting Parker to lose it there even though Jarod wasn't interrogating or even being assertive really. The back and forth they get caught up in and they did in the tv series but she pulls it together. If she bursts into tears and falls apart a little it'll be okay with me. This here though I think is probably less dramatic and with Cate I can see how children make you strong when you think you're at the end. I do appreciate so much that she was on the verge of attack and pulled herself back in and then was on the verge tears and did shed a few here but yanked herself back together. You showed that there was an effort on her part to keep it together and finally confess that she feels like hell and I don't blame her. She's been through hell. Thanks for being realistic with the abuse subject matter and writing the way it should be written about the way the memory messes things up. I get so damn tired of hearing people attack victims like Dr. Ford and others who don't accurately remember everything. Sometimes it's few flashes of details. This is truthful and I love you for being respectful and truthful. Anyhoo do update soon. I love reading you.

OMG. This is shipper utopia Mirage. You naughty non shipper! I can't even believe all the feels and loves I have. "I can't stop it either," Jarod continued, "or promise you it'll end, but I'm not going to laeve you alone with it. People in relationships," he added, finding the taste of Parker's words on his lips pleasant, "don't watch the person they love struggle to keep their head above water and do nothing." You make me cry like a dummy. OH and the C4 and countdown clock... yeasss. I don't know how you navigate all of this but it is magic the way you moved them from what they were ..and I love that scene where she tells him what she wants... to what they are now. More of this. You are the master. Or mistress.. whatever. I love your writing. I crave more.

Title: No Comfort In The Truth (Part II: Not Afraid Of The Dark)

Handled with delicacy like always and is impressive. I enjoyed the comedy. Comedy gold in so many of your chapters. I think Jarod let the I love you slip because in an earlier chapter he was trying not to over burden her with so much but I love that he let it slip and I love that Parker said those words to him. You managed to bring her out of herself, and in such a beautiful way. She apologized to Jarod and his clone and was obviously so burdened by ...too much pain and guilt. Jarod needed to say all of those things and you again wrote him in charater.. you write them all in character, but that man will get into some longwinded talks that make people cry and this wasn't very longwinded but it all needed to be said. He's right. We can't wall up the crap that's already inside of us and will always be alone with our pain and if we put up walls. This was beautiful Mirage. Thanks for including Broots and thanks for Miss Parker reaming Broots. "J fucking Edgar." Gold. You're the best. Thanks and please write us some more soon.

YES! The saga continues and until all the real life anxiety-triggering drama dies down I will be immersing myself into the Pretender universe where if Jarod doesn't kill the bad guys Miss Parker will and if she doesn't Jarod's Mother will. That seems like the sweet surprise twist..Jarod's mom a bad ass. I want it. Make it so Mirage. Because I need that in my life right now. There seems to be no justice ever. You won't ever know how much your work means to me. Please dont stop. I don't notice errors or anything wrong. It's always well written. It's literally perfection.

Intriguing. Miss Parker putting Jarod on the defensive is a tact that I didn't see coming. She goes on to treat him like he's the one with problems and no one is denying that he has his share but the kind of trauma she experienced I think wouldn't make it hard for her to cope and learning about the cloning, Wade, what was done to her to create Cate, and all the things the Centre has thrown at her has to overwhelming. It would break most people. Jarod was abducted and falsely imprisoned for over thirty years but he's had time and freedom to accept the truth and heal.

Miss Parker just remembered what happened to her. I was afraid Jarod was going to back all the way off and leave it and I would have been disappointed in you Mirage but thankfully you took them in a more clear direction that gives them potential for a healthy and honest relationship and that's something they've never had and will both need if Cate is going to have a happy life.

As much as you seem offput by Jarod's methods which...think about it please...as concern...He cares about people. He doesn't want to make people cringe clear out of their skin or roll their eyes. He wants to help. As much as you are offput by his ways you know what his motive is and you still allow Jarod to be Jarod. You also let Miss Parker be Miss Parker with the 'late nineties-Jarod crap' which was all completely in keeping with plausibility. I'm not only grateful for the direction you took here, I'm proud of you for going even an extra mile and having Miss Parker fully confide emotions she'd been hiding and the truth about when she remembered Whitman. She admitted she wanted to run and I love her words.

"The truth isn't going to change because the circumstances have." She also confessed a source of frustration and maybe pain... in that she feels rejected by him maybe or like damaged goods when she said he was 'witholding a helluva lot more than the truth' and for her...maybe she wants to seek refuge and forget with him or de-stress or whatever and I can see how even though she knows he's trying to do the right thing, she might still feel she's being spurned because she is Miss Parker and her middle name is Dichtomy and her other middle name is congitive dissonance. Also, her 'slow your roll, Jarod' was not defensive so much as 'let's get down to what matters here.'

The character development over the course of the series has been refreshing as has the plausibility and their discourse. I enjoyed the part about Julian,  his imitating his brother's lifeworks and can understand why Miss Parker would avoid him. She also tried to avoid Jarod. I think it would add to her uncertainties and confusion.

Margaret overhearing was probably another of my favorite parts of this chapter. Her reaction was so human and realistic and her anger... it sort of makes me feel that Jarod inherited his desire for justice from his mother. And he loves her for it and agrees. So do I by the way.  Babies in cages... dear God in heaven what kind of monsters are we?

I look forward to your next installment. I know real life is difficult and I can't even imagine trying to write in this climate. Take all the time you need. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. It's been delightful to read.  Until next time Mirage....

Nice. I love it. I concur with Jarod and his Mum...babies in cages... how familiar does that sound right now? And you mentioned modified cage cribs way back before real life started copying you. I really love how Jarod and Parker are communicating. His 'just talk to me. Please." kills me. Yes he must be aching for her. Thanks for him treating the issue with the importance it is due and that he's not brushing it off as nothing or letting her brush it off.. I'm so happy Miss Parker is still kick ass and tough and is realistic and not insane. THank you too for shedding light on bipolar disease because Catherine is always portrayed as perfect. I had a bipolar aunt and I can tell you it's not picnic. You were truthful about that too. Even if this is fiction you keep to the facts. I want more.

Author's Response:

Ah, right, it's tragically familiar disgusting and I don't know--incomprehensible. The things humans do to other humans, huh? Because they feel superior and exceptional and consider other humans less than human. It's lost on them entirely that humans become something less than human when they put living things in cages. It's heartbreaking to see history continue to repeat itself, but not surprising.

Jarod couldn't stop her if she wanted to brush it off. It's not really so much that's he not "letting" her do anything. He can't control her. She has found her own way. Of course, Jarod wouldn't be Jarod if he didn't try to interfere help.

No, it's difficult when a loved one is suffering. I imagine being diagnosed with bipolar isn't a picnic either. Thanks for reading and reviewing and your thoughts.

Lol @ your chapter notes and I still didn't notice a single error because the story is so intriguing. Nicely done as always. They were both dancing around what they didn't know. He didn't know if she knew and didn't want to tell her because of "the holy book of quackery lore" laughing my ass off that and many other lines . She didn't want to tell him when she remembered because he's the reason and she knew he'd feel guiltier and he did. They've grown up. I love what she says here about accepting mistakes will be made and not keeping score but foo-ey hon I love it all. You're freaking amazing.

The US is certainly on a bender. I can attest to that personally as it's my country of origin as well. I think some evangelical women are finally coming around and the hangover must be hell and deservedly so. They should have to carry their support for the rapist in chief to full term.

This one took a turn I didn't foresee. Jarod withholding the truth from Parker and also torturing himself. It make sense that even though they've almost established a brutal honesty with each other that now as he finds himself in love and a father he would grow to feel protective of Parker's feelings. He enforces this concern and love by not having sex with her because even the truest consensual sex cannot be completely consensual if she isn't aware of the circumstances, that there's no way out right for her should she decide sex was a mistake and that she doesn't want to be with him. I can see how he would consider all of the repecussions and decide she wouldn't feel eager to have sex at all if she knew the truth about their changed circumstances. Jarod's doing the correct thing here and I hope he will tell her the truth.

I'd still like for her to confide in Jarod, allow him to help her. I think you cringe probably when you think of writing that one. It's only a thought. It's your story. I haven't been disappointed by you yet.

It seems completely plausible too that the bad spray tan in the WH would cut funding to something important as Witness Protection. Just look what he's doing to the water and the national parks. I'm glad you didn't rewrite anything.

Trust your Muses, Mirage.

I do.

This is that other issue you highlight inside an already moving and emotional story. The prose and dialogue are familiar to what we know. These characters have a way and you have captured that "way" and you grow them. The full development you write is what I wanted to see when I used to watch The Pretender while doing my algebra homework. I read you and it's like they are there in front of me again and even better. I love this story. I love that Jarod loves Miss Parker enough to know he doesn't need the sex, that he doesn't want to risk what they have for the physical. He is lying at her side and sharing her bed and giving her comfort. Something else I noticed is a profound example of consent. She isn't trying to convince him to have sex with her or jumping his bones. She doesn't resent him or try to pressure him or tell him he isn't man enough. He explained how things were and she respected him enough to leave it at that. What you've given us here is a special magical gift Mirage. Right now more than ever this lesson needs to be heard. Thank you. Just thank you and wow. So much wow.

Author's Response:

Absolutely, Angela, mutual respect is vital. Pressuring him to consent isn't respectful and it's not consent if she pressures him to have sex with her. Being angry about it isn't respectful. Emasculating him isn't respectful regardless of his reasons for not having sex with her. In this case, his reasons are concern for her and his (and her) incomplete honesty among other things. Anyway thanks for reading and reviewing.

This didn't go the way I thought it would. It's better and I'm glad that Jarod isn't getting all extremely pushy and too forceful with Parker the way he is with the notebook people. That one episode in Season 4 Risque Business was very hard for me to watch and he was just too aggressive with the therapist who had been raped and because of your one story every time I see or write the word "therapist" I see clearly the words the rapist. I'm glad you pointed it out and I wish you had never pointed it out.

No one knows , not even she knows everything. But that's typical probably when there was an instance of child sexual abuse. It's a delicate story and subject matter and you seem to be knocking the chapters on like a professional. I think you are a professional probably and this is only your play area. You give 100% to fan fiction and you don't have to do that but I'm glad you do. More please?

Hello. Yeah, I'm not wild about pushyJarod but I realize that it's part of who he is and he reveals that face quite a bit in my scribblings. The first couple of chapters of this series being some of those scribblings. Thanks for the R&R, Jameason.

I was afraid I wasn't going to like this. I feared you were going in a darker Jarod direction so I'm relieved. For him to have sex with her now when she's there with in the first place because he abducted her would be wrong wrong wrong of him even if she offers herself naked to him on a silver platter. I like your darker evil Jarod novels when that's a part of the plot but right now he's his usual darkness and still good and I like it.

I need to say that I love how Jarod had planned to have one conversation with Ethan and then for him to lose control of the conversation. It shows Jarod's humanity and that he isn't always perfect. Makes him more relatable. I love how you show that Ethan has grown and come a long way and he took control of the conversation and held Jarod accountable. When it came down between allying with Jarod against his sister, Ethan chose to ally with his sister. Can't blame that. She never shot or took Jarod to the Centre but Jarod did abduct her.

LOVE Parker's thoughts about Jarod's own fears that he's chin-deep in. It just shows that he keeps trying to help others when he needs help and easily he could become an enabler even accidentally. Needing help, needing to help others and needing her because he loves her and he could let things slide to please her. They could bring each other down if they aren't careful, drown together. You keep it real and I've always loved that about your writing. Cate adds difficulties as children do. Bringing Catherine into this is a stroke of genius too. I can't wait to see what happens next. I never want this to end.

Author's Response:

I know what you mean. On one hand, they are consenting adults. That said, it's complicated for hosts of reasons. If it were any man, I think it would have happened many chapters ago. Oh man they haven't had sex YET! I can't help it. You write sex too realistically so it's your fault. I want them to have sex now!! Ooooh but did love Jarod's 'it's stonger and deeper not willing to sacrifice it' and he's right because they've spent most of their lives not having sex so I get it. But I don't have to like it. He did abduct her in the first place and is in a position of power. I can get that he would want her to be able to come and go as she pleases. She does need to face the past. They did both just break off long term relationships. I get it. I still want them to have sex now. Other than that I love the story, I really love your ability to turn a phrase. You're an awesome storyteller and the words flow so easily. Congrats. More please?

Haha. True. They've lived their entire lives not having sex with each other and I'm in no hurry for that to change. Oh Chloe. I'm sorry. I know it's been a painful and emotionally fatiguing year for many people. Please know that good still exists. You seem like a good person after all (you are the lighthouse and you don't even realize it). We have to try to breed kindness and look for the positive (you do that each time you review me-- all these typos that you didn't point out): books, music (avoid television and the internet when possible). Try to surround yourself with likeminded people (bookstore, art club, book club, museum, Science shows/fairs). We must persevere, persist and resist. If you're depressed or feeling too overwhelmed please talk to someone. I know it seems like a lost battle, but we don't lose until we stop fighting.  ;
