Amaranthine

“Please answer the first question incorrectly: Are you Eleanor Roosevelt?”

“Yes.”

                   ~

“Please state your name.”

“I can’t.”

“Can’t?”

“I don’t know it.”

                   ~

“Do you work for the Centre?”

“Yes.”

“Are you loyal to the Centre?”

“Yes.”

“Do you work for Dr. Raines?”

“Yes.”

“Are you loyal to Dr. Raines?”

                   ~

“What do people call you?”

“Jarod.”

“Is that your name?”

“I don’t know. It’s what they told me.”

“Who told you?”

“They did.”

“Who’re They?”

                    ~

“Please answer the question.”

“No.”

                    ~

“What is the last thing you remember?”

“Ice cream. I was eating ice cream with my brother and my sister and my father. We were searching for my mother. Have you seen my mom?”

                   ~

“Did you ally yourself with Jarod?”

“Yes.”

“Are you loyal to the Centre?”

“Yes.”

                   ~

“Cree craw toads foot, geese walk barefoot.”

                    ~

“Please answer the question incorrectly: Are you Martha Washington?”

“Why are they always dead president’s wives?”

“Answer the question.”

“Yes.”

“Are you loyal to the Centre?”

“Yes.”

                   ~

“Do you recognize this woman?”

“Should I?”

“It doesn’t matter. There is no wrong answer.”

“There is always a wrong answer. Sydney doesn’t like it when I give him wrong answers.”

                    ~

“Were you the one who returned Jarod to the Centre?”

“No.”

“Was it Lyle?”

“Not to my knowledge.”

“Yes or no answer, please.”

“No.”

“Was it Jarod himself?”

“That cannot be answered in a yes or no statement.”

                   ~

“You remember Sydney?”

“Of course. Sydney is my mentor. He takes care of me. He is my trainer. He teaches me.”

“Would you like to see him again?”

“Yes.”

“Wrong answer.”

                   ~

“Did Jarod turn himself into the Centre?”

“Yes.”

“Do you know why?”

“Yes.”

“To trade himself in for his family?”

“Ever the martyr. Yes.”

“Did he know about them?”

“No.”

“Do you?

“Yes.”

                   ~

“Do you recognize this woman?”

“Yes. It’s Miss Parker. She’s my only friend. She helped me…somehow.”

“She is not your friend anymore, Jarod.”

“Why not?”

“She doesn’t like you anymore.”

                   ~

“Were you going to tell him?

“Yes.”

“Did you help him escape this last time?"

“No.”

“Did he blame you?”

“For what?”

“Did he blame you for everything?”

“Yes.”

“During your allegiance, did you and Jarod enter a sexual relationship?”

“Misunderstood; rephrase the question.”

“Did you and Jarod ever engage in any sexual activities?”

“Yes.”

“Was it consensual?”

“Excuse me?”

“Answer the question: Was your ‘relationship’ consensual to both parties?”

“No.”

                    ~

“Why not?”

“Because of what you are.”

“What am I?”

“You are nothing.”

                   ~

“Were you the consenting party?”

                    ~

“How can I be nothing?”

“When no one around you cares for you anymore, you slowly begin to fade. You have faded, Jarod. No one loves you; no one needs you. You are a computer, a machine. You will do as we say and do as we do. Then you will be something. That is what you want isn’t it? To be somebody?”

“Yes.”

“Good answer.”

                   ~

“Do I need to repeat the question?”

“No.”

“Then answer it.”

“It wasn’t his fault, not entirely.”

“Answer the question.”

“He just… lost it.”

“Were you the consenting party?”

“No.”

~

“But… Sydney. Sydney still loves me. Right?”

“Sydney never loved you.”

“And Miss Parker?”

“She never loved you either. And she never will. But we love you, Jarod. We will always love you.”

“Who are you?”

“We are your family. We are They. And you are one of us.”

                   ~

“Do you know about Sydney's true role in the Centre?”

“Yes.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Were you going to tell him?”

“Yes.”

“Did he believe you returned his family to the Centre?”

“Yes.”

“Did you let him believe that?”

“Yes.”

                   ~

“You are They, Jarod.”

“I don't want to be Jarod.”

"But you are Jarod."

"No."

“Yes. You are They whom you have hated for so long.”

“No.”

“You are one of us. One of They.”

                   ~

“Do you hate him?”

“Yes.”

“Do you love him?”

“Yes.”

“Do you forgive him?”

                    ~

“They are somebody. Now you are somebody too.”

“I am They.”

“You are They.”

“I am They.”

“Very good, Jarod.”

                    ~

“Do you forgive him?”

“There’s nothing to forgive.”

                   ~

“My name is Jarod. I am They.”

                   ~

“Did you kill him?”

“No.”

“Do you know who killed him?”

“No.”

“Do you forgive him?”

                    ~

“She lied, Sir. On one of the questions, Sir. It almost slipped past our monitors.”
“Which question?”
“I don’t…I don’t know, Sir.”
“You don’t know?”
“The page, it- it’s gone and I…I don’t remember.”

                   ~

“Is it him?”
“Yes, I’m afraid it is."
“I’m sorry it ended this way, Sydney. I know you were fond of him.”
“Yes. I am too. Thank you, Margaret.”
“What will happen to Emily now, and to Ethan?”
“The same, I would assume. It will be much more difficult, however. The boy only had a few years outside these walls. They –Emily more specifically- had a lifetime.”
“Can they be re-educated?”
“I hope so. It favours the alternative greatly.”
“Alternative?”
“Dr., Ma’am- Brainwashing sequence is complete. You may commence your studies, Dr. Greene.”
“What name is he going by?”
“Jarod. Gemini no longer exists.”
“Perfect.”
                    ~

“We have a problem, Major.”
“It’s already being taken care of, Dr. Raines.”
“Perfect.”
                   ~

A single shot rang out just before the elevator doors closed. It wasn’t like she hadn’t been expecting it. And in some ways it was a fitting end.

                   ~

“Hello, Jarod. My name is Sydney. I’ll be taking care of you for awhile.”

                   ~
If only.
