She was the only uncorrupted person in his life. The only one that he could spare, that he had never thought of taking a knife, a gun, or other insidious tool to. She was innocent of all incriminating or dangerous knowledge, and he had planned to keep it that way. And in spite of all that effort, she had still been taken from him.

Tears flowed freely down his face. He had made sure he was away from all eyes, digital or other, before removing the photograph from its hallowed place in his bottom drawer. The girl in the picture had had such a bright smile, such life. The most beautiful thing he had ever had a part in creating.

And now she was gone. And he was alone. She was his only ghost.

She was his daughter.
